Did you know that total shoulder arthroplasty has increased by 243 % during the last decade?
Total shoulder arthroplasty is a technique that is used to replace the deceased socket joint and ball with a replacement like a prosthesis made up of metal and polyethylene components. The current components used include polyethylene cemented components that is fixated by allowing Bony in grow within the porous ends of the component. This surgery is used to remove the damaged cartilages of faces and replace them with smooth artificial parts. It is a procedure performed to reduce shoulder pain and improve the range of motion. Anyone can benefit from shoulder replacement surgery.
Mind Boggling Fact
More about Shoulder Arthroplasty
Shoulder Anatomy
The shoulder contains a ball and socket joint where the ball-shaped head (humerus) is placed within the socket ( glenoid). This glenoid is a part of the shoulder blade called the scapula. The tendons and muscles surrounding the humeral head are called the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is responsible for arm movement and it stabilizes the range of motion.
Ideal Candidate
For appropriate shoulder replacement, the patient must have severe pain combined with arthritis with or without rotator cuff tear. Patients with fractures can also be subjected to shoulder replacement surgery if the socket or the humerus is damaged. This technique for surgery is implemented when the conservative options do not offer positive results. If the patient experiences severe pain and cannot perform regular activities shoulder replacement is the best option.
Type of Shoulder Replacement
There are basically two types of shoulder replacement. One in which natural biomechanics are preserved is the Anatomical or Total Shoulder Replacement. There is another variety in which biomechanics of the shoulder is changed. This is called Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement. Here the regular ball of the humerus is shifted to the glenoid side. Hence position of ball and socket is reversed. The decision to perform Anatomical or Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement is made by the assessing the amount of damage in the shoulder joint.
Procedure
The shoulder replacement surgery involves the removal of the damaged portion and replacing it with a plastic or metal cup. A plastic Cup is used to replace the shoulder socket and a metal ball is attached to the humerus. This humerus attachment is performed by inserting the stem down the shaft of the old humerus bone. The patient might also be subjected to reverse total shoulder arthroplasty where a patient has multiple damages that cannot be repaired through shoulder replacement surgery.
If Dr. VIJAY BANG determined that the patient requires a shoulder replacement surgery he will explain the concept in detail to prepare you for the surgery. The patients are subjected to physical therapy after the surgery to experience positive recovery.
Follow Up
After a typical shoulder replacement surgery, the patient’s arm requires a four to six-week rest time where their hand is placed in a shoulder immobilizer. The patient can however walk from the next day. The doctor might encourage a gentle passive range of motion of the shoulder to avoid stiffness. The patients will be introduced to a physical therapist to ensure their appropriate movement of shoulder with safety. Later the physical therapy visits are increased to improve the range of motion. Then the patient can resume their work after 4 months of rest. The complete recovery is possible within 6 to 9 months.
